Total Bone and Joint Health
Hamilton Health Sciences and the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford are working together to improve bone and joint health. This Total Bone and Joint Health program is for individuals wanting to improve their health before and after having surgery for a hip or knee replacement.
This program can also help if you are suffering from chronic joint problems such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. These conditions often cause bone loss, loss of mobility and strength, pain and even disfigurement. This program may help you feel better, so you can do the things that you enjoy.
This is a registered program that is included in the YMCA membership. All participants are required to meet with a YMCA Wellness Coach for an initial intake interview to discuss medical history and assist in the development goals. A physician's approval is strongly recommended for the program.
Trained YMCA staff and health care providers from Hamilton Health Sciences are with you all the way. They will help you become more active and help you learn ways to live with the complications of you condition in a friendly supportive environment.
Weekly education sessions will provide practical information on:
- Bone health
- Pain management
- Meditation and relaxation
- Energy conservation and work simplification
- Working with you health care team
- Post surgery precautions
- Hospital recovery
- Weight management - creating balance
- The importance of physical activity
You may join the program at any time. The education sessions run for 8 weeks and rotate continuously. Participants may join in these sessions at any time.
This program is offered at the Flamborough, Les Chater and Ron Edwards YMCAs. Please visit one of the YMCA membership desks for more information or visit www.ymcahb.on.ca
