There are four Emergency Departments in Hamilton, one of which is dedicated to treating children 17 and under only, serving all of Hamilton, Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek, Flamborough and the region.

IMPORTANT: McMaster University Medical Centre treats children 17 and under only. Adults 18 and over will continue to be treated at any of the other 3 emergency departments in Hamilton.

Emergency Departments 
Emergency Departments receive ambulances and walk-in patients of all ages. They are staffed by physicians and nurses trained in emergency medicine. Emergency Departments experience high volumes of patients who are treated in order of urgency, not by arrival time. Please be patient.

They treat emergency and life-threatening illness or injury including:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Bleeding that won't stop
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Broken bones
  • Partial or total amputation of a limb
  • Traumas or injuries to the head
  • Deep cuts or wounds
  • Severe burns
  • Severe pain
  • Poisoning
  • Loss of consciousness - unable to wake up
  • Sudden headache, dizziness, weakness, numbness, trouble seeing or speaking 
The Children's-only Emergency Department treats emergency, life-threatening and non-life-threatening illness or injury of children. It is staffed by a team of physicians, nurses and specialists trained in emergency medicine who recognize and treat the unique medical needs of children. It receives ambulances and walk-in patients who are 17 and under only. It treats patients in order of urgency, not by arrival time. Please be patient.
