Pregnancy Planning

If you are an HIV positive woman you should know that you can have a healthy pregnancy. Many women fear giving their child HIV during pregnancy, this is called Vertical Transmission.  Today we have ways of preventing HIV transmission from mother to child:

1. Prenatal HIV testing
2. HIV drugs for the mother during her pregnancy, labour and delivery
3. HIV drugs for the baby after delivery
4. Caesarean section delivery
5. Formula instead of breast feeding

Some women also worry that they cannot talk to their doctor or healthcare provider about becoming pregnant. We support HIV positive women’s right to have a child and we want to make sure you get the information that you need so that you can make the right choices for you and your family including:

  • How to manage your HIV and pregnancy
  • How to prevent infecting your child
  • Referral to a fertility clinic for help getting pregnant or to make sure not to infect your partner.
