Gynecological Care

For women living with HIV some gynecological conditions are more common, more serious and more difficult to treat:

  • Vaginal infections such as yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis;
  • Sexually transmitted infections such as herpes, gonorrhea and Chlamydia;
  • HPV, cervical dysplasia and cancer;
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease.

For women living with HIV it is important to see your doctor regularly for routine cervical screening (Pap test).

Obstetrical care

Advances in HIV treatment as well as strategies to prevent vertical (mother-to-child) transmission have reduced the risk of transmitting HIV from mother to child.  Today many women living with HIV are considering pregnancy and having healthy, HIV-negative children. Your healthcare provider can help you have a healthy pregnancy and reduce the chances of infecting your child.
