Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation supports approximately 120 acute rehabilitation beds, which are co-located on the campuses of the acute care hospitals. Hamilton Health Sciences’ specialized rehabilitation programs treat people with spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic conditions, and cancer. Its large prosthetics and orthotics program includes an in-house manufacturing facility. The department supports one of the largest residency training programs in Canada.

Dr. Shanker Nesathurai
Dr. Shanker Nesathurai serves as the chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. He also is the Division Director for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at is a Professor of Medicine at McMaster University. Shanker graduated completed his premedical studies at the New York Institute of Technology, and earned his MD at McMaster. He also earned a graduate degree in quantitative methods from Harvard. In the past, he served as the chief of rehabilitation services at Boston University Medical Center, and was the project director of the New England Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center.
