|Hamilton Health Sciences among Hamilton-Niagara’s Top Employers for 2014|
On Nov. 25, 2013, Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) was announced as one of Hamilton-Niagara’s Top Employers for 2014. Now entering its eighth year, Hamilton-Niagara's Top Employers is an annual competition organized by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers. This special designation recognizes the employers in the Hamilton-Niagara area of Ontario that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work.
“We’re proud to be among the stellar group of regional organizations honoured with this recognition,” says Louise Taylor Green, vice president of corporate affairs and strategy at Hamilton Health Sciences. “Over the last year we’ve made physician and employee engagement a top priority at HHS. We know that our workforce is deeply passionate about providing outstanding patient care and that a positive and supportive work environment enables them to deliver compassionate, high-quality care in a team-centered environment.”
Employers are evaluated by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers using the same eight criteria as the national competition: (1) Physical Workplace; (2) Work Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health, Financial & Family Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time Off; (5) Employee Communications; (6) Performance Management; (7) Training & Skills Development; and (8) Community Involvement. Employers are compared to other organizations in their field to determine which offers the most progressive and forward-thinking programs.
This year alone, HHS launched a number of new, staff- and physician-focused initiatives to support its new vision of “Best Care for All”. Notable initiatives include ‘Shine’, a comprehensive wellness program that is available to all employees, physicians and volunteers. The program includes the design and build of fitness facilities across multiple HHS sites with the Juravinski site centre already open and others under construction. The program recognizes the challenges of shift-work and lifestyle management and the inherent nature of healthcare work. To offset some of the work environment stressors, there are offerings of yoga, zumba, learn-to-run classes, healthy eating & nutrition sessions, and resilience-building mindfulness programs. Over the last year, HHS has also completed and embarked on a number of facility improvements that include design elements inspired by employee feedback and intended to foster workplace comfort and safety.
“This special recognition validates and further motivates our efforts to be the organization of choice for talented people,” says Andrew Doppler, interim vice president of human resources at HHS. “Although we are a large family at HHS, we recognize that each of our physicians, employees and volunteers makes an important contribution to our organization, and to our community.
“It’s our goal to continually and increasingly support and encourage the well-being of our workforce, and provide them with the tools they require to thrive in their role at HHS, and beyond.”
