HHS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Gala Raises Over $600,000 for Medical Research
HAMILTON – On Saturday, March 29, over 900 donors and supporters packed the Hamilton Convention Centre for Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation’s For Your Eyes Only gala. The sold out, James Bond inspired event was a massive success raising more than $600,000 in support of research at Hamilton Health Sciences.

Headlining the evening’s entertainment was two-time Grammy Award-winner, Sheena Easton, who dazzled those in attendance performing “For Your Eyes Only”, the title track from the 1981 film of the same name, along with some of her other hits. In addition to Easton, the event also featured the musical talents of Sean Jones and the Montreal Rhapsody Orchestra who kept the crowd moving well into the morning.

The annual Gala, which attracts a large and diverse audience, is the Foundation’s premier fundraiser and has earned a reputation as the city’s “must attend” black-tie event of the year.

New this year, the event included a limited number of after-party tickets for those under 40. The tickets offered the opportunity for young professionals to attend the event and mix and mingle with business and community leaders from across the region.

Proceeds from the event will help fund five key projects that represent a cross section of the world-class medical research taking place across Hamilton Health Sciences including:

- The development of a Stroke Fellowship Program at Hamilton General Hospital;
- A study paving the way for personalized medicine for lung cancer patients at Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre;
- A large-scale trial aimed at reducing complications in patients requiring surgery after a hip fracture;
- Research at St. Peter’s Hospital investigating promising interventions to combat frailty and improve health in older adults; and
- Studies by the McMaster Children’s Hospital Research Collaborative investigating ways reduce the impact of surgery on children.

Hamilton Health Sciences is home to one of the most intensive environments for medical research in Canada. Through a network of internationally renowned research institutes, centres and groups, more than 500 investigators and their teams are conducting research ranging from basic laboratory tests, to trials in worldwide populations involving hundreds of thousands of participants. With the help of Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, these researchers are addressing major global health challenges, translating new discoveries into efficient practices for prevention and patient care, and placing Hamilton Health Sciences at the forefront of medical research.
