Dr. Salim Yusuf
Executive Director

As the director of the Population Health Research Institute, Dr. Salim Yusuf founded and has since proudly led the world renowned research institute in 1999. Dr. Yusuf was previously the Director of the Preventive Cardiology and Therapeutics Research Program at the Hamilton Civic Hospitals Research Centre founded in 1992 from which the PHRI evolved. Dr. Yusuf is currently a Professor of Medicine at McMaster University as well as the endowed Chair for Cardiovascular Research for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. Dr. Yusuf was formerly the Director of Cardiology at the Hamilton Health Sciences. Dr. Yusuf now holds the titles of Chief Scientific Officer and the Vice-President of Research at Hamilton Health Sciences. Dr. Yusuf holds a highly distinguished medical degree from St. John's Medical College and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar. Dr. Yusuf's long list of awards and accomplishments include becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Yusuf is also the recipient of the Prix Galien Research Award, the Louis and Artur Lucian Award for Research, the Paul Wood Silver Medal for Cardiology Research and the R.T. Hall Professorship for Cardiology. He has also published over 500 articles making him one of the top cited physicians in the world and the author of many citation classics.

 

 

 

Dr. Hertzel Gerstein
Deputy Director

Dr. Hertzel C. Gerstein is an Endocrinologist and Professor at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences, where he holds the Population Health Institute Chair in Diabetes Research. He is also Director of the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism, Director of the Diabetes Care and Research Program and Deputy Director of the Population Health Research Institute. Key studies in which he has played a major leadership role include HOPE, MICRO HOPE, ACCORD, DREAM, EpiDREAM, ORIGIN and TIDE. In addition to his research, he is the founding director of Diabetes Hamilton - a novel publicly available program that facilitates the ability of people with diabetes to best manage their disease. Dr. Gerstein has published more than 180 papers, editorials and commentaries, mainly on diabetes-related issues. He is co-editor of the textbook Evidence-Based Diabetes Care, and is currently Associate Editor for ACP Journal Club, and on the editorial boards of the Canadian Journal of Diabetes, the Journal of Diabetes, and Diabetes & Vascular Disease Research. He has been the recipient of several honours including the Canadian Diabetes Association's Young Scientist Award (1999), Frederick G. Banting award (1999), and Charles H. Best award (2007).

 

 

Dr. Koon Teo
Associate Director

Dr. Koon Teo is an Associate Director at the Population Health Research Institute providing senior leadership to the institute's direction and research studies. Dr. Teo is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Cardiology at McMaster University and an Associate Member of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics.  Previously, Dr. Teo served as the acting director of the Division of Cardiology at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences. Dr. Teo earned his medical degree at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and his PhD in Medical Sciences from the University of Alberta. His wide range of work includes 16 book chapters, 256 articles and 275 abstracts featured in over 15 medical journals worldwide. He was also the Canadian Principal Investigator for the COURAGE trials the results of which impacts the practice of cardiology worldwide. He is the principal investigator for the Canadian Institute for Health Research funded FAMILY study examining the origin of obesity and cardiometabolic risk factors in early childhood.

 

 

 

Dr. Sonia Anand
Associate Director

Dr. Sonia Anand is an Associate Director for the Population Health Research Institute and the leading Principal Investigator for the Aboriginal/ Ethnicity Health and Women's Health research programs at the Population Health Research Institute. Dr. Anand is currently the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario/ Michael G. DeGroote Chair in Population Health Research at McMaster University as well as the Director of the Population Genomics Program in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr. Anand is currently a Professor of Medicine at McMaster University and the Endowed Chair in Women's Health Research. Dr. Anand holds a Bachelor of Arts in Life Sciences from Queen's University, and both a Doctor of Medicine and a Master of Science in Design, Measurement and Evaluation from McMaster University. Dr. Anand has won numerous prestigious awards such as the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine's Young Investigator Award and the Cardiovascular Society's Young Investigator Award. Dr. Anand has also been inducted into the McMaster University's Alumni Gallery.



Dr. Heather Arthur
Women's Health

Dr. Arthur is a Principal Investigator for the Women's Health Program at the Population Health Research Institute. Dr. Arthur has been the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario's endowed chair in cardiovascular nursing research and an Associate Professor at the School of Nursing in the faculty of Health Sciences. Now Dr. Arthur is the Co-director of the Cardiac and Vascular Nursing Science Unit at the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation. Dr. Arthur studied her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. Arthur later received both her Master of Science in Cardiac Nursing and her Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Science from the University of Toronto. Dr. Arthur is the recipient of the Cardiovascular Nursing Research Excellence Award from the Canadian Council of Cardiovascular Nurses and the Career Scientist from the Ontario Ministry of Health. She has co-authored a book, written 8 book chapters and published over 70 peer reviewed journal articles.

  

 

  

Dr. Stuart Connolly 
Arrhythmias

Dr. Stuart Connolly is the leading Principal Investigator for the Arrhythmia research program at the Population Health Research Institute. Currently, this program leads many large randomized controlled trials of treatment for the management of atrial fibrillation, bradycardia and defibrillator therapy. These trials include more than 40,000 enrolled patients and involve more than 1,000 centers in 40 countries.  Dr. Connolly is also a professor of medicine at McMaster University and the Director of the division of Cardiology at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences. Dr. Connolly holds both his Bachelors of Arts and Medical degree from McGill University. Dr. Connolly has led more than two dozen large randomized controlled trials over the past 20 years and has published over 190 articles and 73 abstracts in his career as a medical researcher.

 

 

  

Dr. Catherine Demers
Heart Failure/LV Dysfunction

Dr. Demers is a Principal Investigator for the Heart Failure and LV Dysfunction Program at the Population Health Research Institute.  She is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and Division of Cardiology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. Demers received her medical degree from Universitéde Sherbrooke and then later obtained a Master of Science in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University. Since then, Dr. Demers has received many honors and awards commending her research talent and accomplishments including research and fellowship awards from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Fonds de la recherche en Santé du Québec, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. Dr. Demers currently holds a Career Scientist Award from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care of Ontario (2003-2010). Her career publications range from various peer reviewed articles, abstracts and book chapters.

 

 

Dr. P.J. Devereaux
Perioperative Ischema

Dr. Devereaux is a Principal Investigator for the Perioperative Ischemia program at the Population Health Research Institute. Presently, Dr. Devereaux is a staff cardiologist at Hamilton Health Sciences, a clinical epidemiologist and Associate Professor at McMaster University. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax. Dr. Devereaux received his Medical Degree and his PhD in Clinical Health Sciences and Health Research Methodology from McMaster University in Hamilton. His areas of research interest include perioperative vascular events in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery and surgical randomized controlled trials. Dr. Devereaux has won many awards including the Dean's Award for Excellence in Communicating Graduate Research, the Yves Morin Poster Award and the James Hogg Young Investigator Award.

 

 

Dr. Jeff Healey
Arrhythmias

Dr. Healey is a Principal Investigator for the Arrhythmias program at the Population Health Research Institute. He is currently an Assistant Professor within the Division of Cardiology at McMaster. His research is concerned with the importance of risk factors such as hypertension and obesity on the development of atrial fibrillation and its complications. Dr. Healey received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry at Queen's University, his medical degree from the University of Ottawa and his Master of Science degree from McMaster University.  Dr. Healey has won various awards including the Doris and Howard Polk Award and the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation Research Career Award.

 

 

Dr. Andre Lamy
CV Surgery

Dr. Lamy is the leading Principal Investigator for the Cardiovascular Surgery program at the Population Health Research Institute. He is also a dedicated associate professor in the Division of Cardiac Surgery at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He has been instrumental to bringing a new technique for off-pump surgery and atrial ablation in the treatment of stand-alone atrial fibrillation to the Hamilton General Hospital. Dr. Lamy studied at the College Lafleche in Trois Rivières, Québec. Dr. Lamy received his medical degree from the Université Laval. Dr. Lamy has written and published approximately 50 articles and is a two time winner of the George Saxton Fellowship.

 

Dr. Eva Lonn
Atherosclerosis Imaging and Cardiovascular Prevention

Dr. Lonn is the leading Principal Investigator for both the Atherosclerosis Imaging and Cardiovascular Prevention programs at the Population Health Research Institute. She is currently a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.  Dr. Lonn received her medical degree from the Hebrew University, Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem and received a Master of Science degree in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University. Dr. Lonn's research interests are in clinical trials in cardiovascular prevention, understanding of the determinants of atherothrombotic cardiovascular diseases, including traditional and novel risk factors and ultrasound imaging in atherosclerosis. She has lead several large trials in cardiovascular prevention including the HOPE-2 and HOPE-3 studies and several large imaging studies in atherosclerosis, including the SECURE and STARR trials. Dr. Lonn has received numerous peer reviewed grants from many granting agencies including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. She served also on the Executive Committee of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and on numerous grants committees. Dr Lonn has published over 150 peer reviewed articles, many in high impact journals, 8 book chapters, may abstracts and has delivered numerous invited lectures at various major national and international meetings.

 

Dr. Robert McKelvie
Heart Failure/ LV Dysfunction

Dr. McKelvie is the leading Principal Investigator for the Heart Failure and LV Dysfunction research program at the Population Health Research Institute. He is currently the Medical Director of the Cardiac Health and Rehabilitation Centre, the Heart Function Clinic and the Director of the Exercise Laboratory at Hamilton Health Sciences. Dr. McKelvie is a Professor of Medicine and an Associate Member in the Department of Physical Education and of Graduate Studies in Human Biodynamics at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. McKelvie holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physiology, a Medical Degree and a Master of Science Degree in Physiology from the University of Western Ontario. Dr. McKelvie also has a PhD in Physiology from McMaster University. He also held the coveted title of the Career Scientist of the Ontario Ministry of Health for ten years. Dr. McKelvie has written over 130 peer reviewed articles, 145 abstracts and given 360 lectures and presentations.

 

 

Dr. Shamir Mehta
Coronary Interventional Health Delivery and Acute Coronary Syndrome

Dr. Mehta is a Principal Investigator for both the Acute Coronary Syndrome and the Coronary Interventional Health Delivery programs at the Population Health Research Institute. He is an Associate Professor in McMaster University's Department of Medicine. Dr. Mehta obtained both his Bachelor of Science and Medical Degree from the University of Toronto and his Master of Science in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University. Dr. Mehta has won the Canadian Institute of Health Research Senior Personnel New Investigator Career Award and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada's Junior Personnel Award. Dr. Mehta has been published in ten different medical journals like The Lancet, JAMA, and the European Heart Journal. Dr. Mehta's success in research has even earned him a coveted Canada's Top 40 under 40TM Award.

 

 

Dr. Carlos Morillo
Arrhythmias and Developing Countries

Dr. Morillo is a Principal Investigator for both the Arrhythmias and Developing Countries research programs at the Population Health Research Institute. Presently, Dr. Morillo is a Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Arrhythmia Service at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He is also the Program Director of the Cardiac Electrophysiology and Autonomic Physiology Fellowship. Dr. Morillo received his medical degree from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia. Dr. Morillo has published more than 160 peer reviewed articles and 294 abstracts in medical journals everywhere. He is also the recipient of many prestigious awards including the Charles Pfizer Research Award, the National Academy of Medicine- Aventis Clinical Research Award as well as the Award for Best Researcher from the Sociedad Columbianade Cardiolgia.

 

 

Dr. Katherine Morrison
Childhood Risk Factors

Dr. Morrison is the leading Principal Investigator for the Childhood Risk Factors Research program at the Population Health Research Institute. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. Morrison holds an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from McMaster University and a Medical Doctorate from the University of Calgary. Dr. Morrison has won many various awards including the Excellence in Pediatric Research Award as well as a Heart and Stroke Foundation Fellowship in Preventive Cardiology.

 

Dr. Madhu Natarajan
Coronary Interventional Health Delivery

Dr. Natarajan is the leading Principal Investigator for the Coronary Interventional Health Delivery program at the Population Health Research Institute. He is an Associate Professor at McMaster University, the Co-director of Catheterization labs, and the Medical Director of Cardiology at the Hamilton General Hospital. Dr. Natarajan holds a Medical Degree from the University of Toronto and a Master's of Science in Health Research Methiodology from McMaster University. He is the winner of many awards including the Excellence in Research Award from Roche Laboratories, the Medical Council of Canada's Farquharson Research Scholarship and the Arthur Pigott Award praising him for both his devotion to cardiac research as well as his past academic achievements. Dr. Natarajan has also published over 85 articles during his medical research career.

 

 

Dr. Martin O'Donnell
Stroke & Cognitive Function

Dr. O'Donnell is the primary Principal Investigator for the Strokes/Cognitive Function research program at the Population Health Research Institute. Dr. O'Donnell is the William Walsh Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine and is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine in the Internal, Geriatric and Thrombosis Division at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He holds an MB BCh from University College in Cork, an MRCPI from the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland. Dr. O'Donnell also holds a PhD in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University. Dr. O'Donnell is the winner of several prestigious awards like the Canadian Institute for Health Research's New Investigator Award.

 

Dr. Tej Sheth
Atherosclerosis Imaging

Dr. Tej Sheth is a Principal Investigator for the Atherosclerosis Imaging program at the Population Health Research Institute. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University. Dr. Sheth holds a Bachelors of Arts and Science from McMaster University and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toronto. Dr. Sheth has received many awards such as the Research Career Development Award from McMaster University and the Solmon Award from the Division of Cardiology at Sunnybrook Hospital.

 

 

Dr. Richard Whitlock
CV Surgery

Dr. Whitlock is a Principal Investigator for the Cardiovascular Surgery program at the Population Health Research Institute. Dr. Whitlock is currently an Assistant Professor within the Department of Surgery at McMaster University. He holds a Bachelor of Science, a Masters of Health Research Methodology and Clinical Epidemiology and a PhD in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University. He also holds a Medical Degree from the University of Toronto. Dr. Whitlock has been awarded many honors for his various accomplishments including the Ted Thomas Prize from McMaster University and the Anemia Institute's Award for Research and Education.

 

 

Dr. Zubin Punthakee
Cardiovascular Prevention Program and the Childhood Risk Factors Program

Dr. Punthakee is a Principal Investigator for the Cardiovascular Prevention program and the Childhood Risk Factors program at the Population Health Research Institute. He is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics, Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism at McMaster University. Dr. Punthakee holds a medical degree from McMaster University and a Masters of Science in Epidemology and Biostatistics from McGill University. He has been supported by Research Career Awards from Hamilton Health Sciences and the Department of Medicine at McMaster University, and holds research grants from agencies including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He has had leadership roles in the TIDE trial, ORIGINALE study and RICH LEGACY study.

 

 

Dr. Andrew Mente
Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Dr. Mente is a Principal Investigator for the Epidemiology program at the Population Health Research Institute.  He received his doctoral degree in Epidemiology from the University of Toronto. He completed post-doctoral training in cardiovascular epidemiology at McMaster University, and is currently an Assistant Professor in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University. Dr. Mente has received a Research Fellowship from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, and a Research Early Career Award from Hamilton Health Sciences. Dr. Mente is currently working in the Population Urban and Rural Epidemiological (PURE) study, and is interested in the role of essential minerals (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium) in hypertension and cardiovascular diseases in populations around the world.

 

 

Dr. Robby Nieuwlaat
Knowledge Translation

Dr. Nieuwlaat is a Principal Investigator for the Knowledge Translation program at the Population Health Research Institute. He is currently an Assistant Professor within the Department of Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics at McMaster University. Dr. Nieuwlaat holds a Masters of Health Sciences and Epidemiology, and a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology from Maastricht University in The Netherlands. Dr. Nieuwlaat received a Rubicon award from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) for his post-doctoral research at the Population Health Research Institute, and has published over 40 peer-reviewed scientific papers.

 

 

Dr. Robert Hart
Stroke Program

Dr. Hart is the leading Principal Investigator for the Stroke program at the Population Health Research Institute.  He is a Vascular Neurologist, Professor of Medicine (Neurology) and the Michael DeGroote Endowed Chair in Stroke Research at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences, and co-Director of the McMaster/Hamilton Health Sciences Stroke Fellowship. After completing a fellowship in cerebrovascular disease at the Oregon Health Sciences University, he spent most of his career at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio before relocating to McMaster University in September 2011. He has a long-standing interest in stroke, stroke research, and clinical trials. He has directed several randomized clinical trials serving as the principal investigator of the NIH/NINDS-sponsored Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation (SPAF) I, II and III trials (1987-2000). Antithrombotic therapies to prevent stroke in atrial fibrillation and especially novel oral anticoagulants are areas of special interest.

 

 

Dr. Guillaume Pare
Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory

Dr. Pare is a Principal Investigator for the Genetic Epidemiology program at the Population Health Research Institute.  He is also Assistant Professor of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at McMaster University and Director of the Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory. Dr. Pare is a Medical Biochemist with board certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Pare completed a Master’s in Human Genetics at McGill University under the supervision of renowned geneticist Dr. Thomas Hudson. He further trained in genetic epidemiology with Dr. Paul Ridker at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Pare currently holds a Canada Research Chair in Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology. His clinical interests are centered on lipoprotein disorders, obesity and cardiovascular disease prevention. His corresponding research interests are in cardiovascular genetics, biomarker development and pharmacogenomics. His latest contributions are the characterization of the common genetic determinants of inflammatory markers, lipoprotein fractions and antiplatelet agents action, as well as development of novel statistical tools for analysis of genetic datasets.

 

 

Dr. Hisham Dokainish
Echocardiography

Dr. Dokainish is a Principal Investigator for the Echocardiography program at the Population Health Research Institute.  He was born in Hamilton, and completed undergraduate studies and medical school at McMaster University. He then completed Internal Medicine and Cardiology residencies at the University of Ottawa, followed by an echocardiography fellowship at Vancouver General Hospital. Dr. Dokainish was hired on cardiology faculty at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 2002, returning to Hamilton in October, 2009. He is currently Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiology at McMaster University and Director of Echocardiography at Hamilton Health Sciences. His interests include cardiac hemodynamics, myocardial performance and diastolic dysfunction and diastolic heart failure. He has published 50scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.

 

 

Dr. John Eikelboom
Thrombosis

Dr. Eikelboom is a Principal Investigator for the Thrombosis program at the Population Health Research Institute.  He is aslo Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, McMaster University, and haematologist in the Thrombosis Service, Hamilton General Hospital, Ontario, Canada. He completed his training in internal medicine and haematology in Perth, Australia, in 1998 and subsequently undertook a Fellowship in Thrombosis Medicine and Clinical Research Methodology at McMaster University, Hamilton. Dr. Eikelboom returned to McMaster in 2005. His current research focuses on the efficacy and safety of antithrombotic therapies, the prognostic importance of bleeding and transfusion, and the mechanisms of variable response to antiplatelet drugs.

 

 

Dr. Sanjit Jolly
Interventional Cardiology

Dr. Jolly is a Principal Investigator for the Interventional Cardiology program at the Population Health Research Institute. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree at the Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario. Medical School, internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship training were all completed at University of Toronto, Ontario. Subsequently, he completed an interventional cardiology fellowship at both St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto and Hamilton Health Sciences, McMaster University. Dr. Jolly is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with certification in internal medicine and cardiology.

Ms. Janette Panhuis 
Chief Operating Officer

Ms. Panhuis joined PHRI in 2009 as the Director, Quality Assurance responsible for Quality Systems, moving into the Chief Operating Officer position in June 2011.   In addition to bringing over 10 years of pharmaceutical industry experience in Quality Assurance, Janette has the underlying clinical training and expertise to support  and direct operations of PHRI research and development. Prior to her QA work, Ms. Panhuis held roles in the health-research environment including Cardiovascular ICU nursing at Toronto General Hospital progressing to senior administrative roles at the hospital before moving into Clinical Trial Project Management and Research Administration in industry.  Ms. Panhuis holds a Masters of Business Administration from York University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Western Ontario.

 

 

Ms. Jackie Bosch 
Project Director

As a Project Director at the Population Health Research Institute, Ms. Bosch oversees many studies in the area of primary and secondary cardiovascular disease and diabetes prevention. Ms. Bosch is also an Associate Professor at the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University. Ms. Bosch is part of the organization committee for the Sensible Guidelines working group to improve key aspects or research implementation, is part of the faculty in the international Clinical Trials courses offered by PHRI and is working with Dr. Martin O'Donnell to develop functional outcome measures to compliment the data on cognitive abilities currently collected in many of our studies. In addition, Ms. Bosch is involved in stroke rehabilitation research. Ms. Bosch has published over 40 peer reviewed articles, 6 book chapters and has co-authored a book. Ms. Bosch has been awarded honours such as the Contribution to the School of Rehabilitation Science award at McMaster and the President's Award for outstanding Service.

 

 

Ms. Susan Chrolavicius
Senior Project Manager

Ms. Chrolavicius is a senior project manager at the Population Health Research Institute.  Ms. Chrolavicius holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from McMaster University and her Registered Nurse Designation from the St. Joseph Hospital in Hamilton and St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. Ms. Chrolavicius is the clinical research coordinator of 3 large trials and has been published over 25 times in various medical journals such as the Lancet and the European Heart Journal.

 

 

 

Ms. Sumathy Rangarajan
Project Manager 

Ms. Rangarajan is a project manager at the Population Health Research Institute.  Ms. Rangarajan oversees large international studies such as PURE, PURE Offspring, INTERSTROKE and INTERHEART.  Ms. Rangarajan holds both a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Science degree from Pune University in India.

 

 

 

 

Ms. Ellison Themeles
Project Manager

Ms. Themeles is a project manager at the Population Health Research Institute. Ms. Themeles holds both a Bachelor of Arts degree in Gerontology and Sociology and a Master of Science Degree in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University.

 
 

 

 

Ms. Rose Mayhew
Coordinator, Diagnostic Specimen Unit 

Ms. Mayhew is the Coordinator and Department Manager of the Diagnostic Specimen Unit at the Population Health Research Institute. Ms. Mayhew is responsible for the management of specimens from local site collection, processing, and shipping to receipt by the Central Laboratory. Ms. Mayhew studied Chemical Engineering at Mohawk College's School of Applied Arts and Technology, and received her Certified Clinical Research Associate accreditation at McMaster University.

 

 

Dr. Tara McCready
Program Director, CANNeCTIN 

Dr. McCready is the Program Director for the Canadian Network and Centre for Trials Internationally (CANNeCTIN) at the Population Health Research Institute. CANNeCTIN is a national network funded by the CIHR/CFI Clinical Research Initiative program to improve the prevention and treatment of cardiac and vascular diseases and diabetes. Previously the Executive Director of the Canadian Maternal, Infant, Child and Youth Research Network, Dr. McCready holds both a PhD in Biochemistry and a MBA in Technology Commercialization from the University of Alberta.

 

 

 

Dr. Janice Pogue 
Statistics Director

Dr. Pogue is the Statistics Director at the Population Health Research Institute and an Assistant Professor in the department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University (http://fhs.mcmaster.ca/ceb/faculty_member_pogue.htm). Dr. Pogue is integral to the maintenance of the numerous databases of many large multicentre randomized clinical controlled trials and epidemiology studies. Dr. Pogue is responsible for the supervision of the statistical activities at the PHRI. Dr. Pogue received both her Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and her Masters degree in Experimental Psychology from York University in Toronto. Dr. Pogue also holds a Masters Degree in Mathematics and Statistics from Queen's University and a PhD in Health Research Methodology with Biostatistics specialization from McMaster University. Dr. Pogue has written over 180 publications, is a co-investigator on numerous grants, and been credited with two Teaching Excellence Awards at McMaster University. Dr. Pogue was also a recipient of the President's Award for Outstanding Service at McMaster University. 

 

Ms. Jane Gaviller-Fortune
Director, Quality Assurance

Ms. Gaviller-Fortune is the Director of Quality Assurance at the Population Health Research Institute. Ms. Gaviller-Fortune received her Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Waterloo and has over 17 years of experience in clinical quality assurance. Ms. Gaviller-Fortune also holds certification as a Registered Quality Assurance Professional in GCP (RQAP-GCP).

 

 

 

Mr. Andrew Renner 
Director of Information Communications Technology

Mr. Renner is the Director of Information and Communications Technology at the Population Health Research Institute. Mr. Renner provides strategic leadership for the PHRI's telecommunication technology, infrastructure and data management solutions. Mr. Renner received both his Bachelor of Science in Mathematical and Computer Science and his Honours Bachelor of Kinesiology from McMaster University and has over 10 years experience in Information and Communications Technology.

 

 

Ms. Beena Cracknell
Director of Financial and Contract Services

Ms. Cracknell is the Director of Financial and Contract Services. Beena and her team manage over 100 cost centers and 200 members of the PHRI family across the globe in three different currencies and markets. Ms. Cracknell is a Certified General Accountant after studying accounting at Ryerson University.

 

 

 

 

Ms. Sue Stansbury 
Administrator of Human Resources 

Ms. Stansbury is the Administrator of the Population Health Research Institute. Previously, the Executive Assistant to the Director of PHRI, Ms.Stansbury is now responsible for all human resources activities including recruitment, succession planning, employee relations, career development, position evaluation and the annual performance review process. Ms. Stansbury holds a Human Resources Management Certificate from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
