As a regional centre of excellence for several programs including Trauma, Neurosurgery, Stroke, Burns, Cardiac & Vascular care, HGH offers highly skilled tertiary and quaternary care to a population of over 2.3 million residents within the Central South region of Ontario. And, HGH is one of only four hospitals in the province to provide Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) care.
The three ICUs that provide specialization and unique opportunities include:
- Cardiovascular ICU: Supports the regional Cardiac and Vascular Program focused on comprehensive management of critically ill cardiovascular surgical patients including those requiring coronary artery bypass surgery, valve interventions and aortic procedures. Other patient populations served includes those requiring cardiac mechanical circulatory support and extracorporeal life support.
- Medical Surgical ICU: Provides complex disease pathophysiology and critical care management of various medicine, surgical, vascular patients.
- Neurological Trauma ICU: Supports regional trauma and neurosurgical programs and provide specialized care for clinical spine and stroke programs.
Each year at HGH:
- 50,000+ patients are treated
- 2,500+ patients are cared for across these three ICUs
- 100+ patients are airlifted to receive lifesaving critical care
