Urology Clinics

Clinics run several times per week offering evaluation and treatment. A typical clinic visit will include assessment, physical examination, review of any diagnostic tests and establishment of plan of care.

Surgery

Specialized pediatric urological surgical care is provided for acquired and congenital genitourinary conditions including surgery of the urinary tract (i.e. kidneys, ureters, bladder) and genitalia (i.e. penis, testes, genital reconstruction). Surgery for tumors of the genitourinary tract is also offered in infants and children.

Bladder Function and Biofeedback Clinic

Specialized Nurse Practitioner (NP) run clinic offering services to school-aged and adolescent patients with bladder and/or bowel dysfunction and voiding dysfunction. Common conditions include urinary incontinence, recurrent urinary tract infections and constipation. Within the clinic voiding is assessed with flow studies and post void residual assessments. Biofeedback therapy is often offered. The NP work closely with the patient and parent to establish healthy bladder and bowel habits/routines through bladder re-training principles and management of constipation.

Spina Bifida Clinic

The pediatric urology team is part of the multi-disciplinary Spina Bifida clinic offering urological care to children with congenital spinal lesions.

• Your child’s Health Card. The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care requires us to validate your health card at every clinic visit
• Voiding diary, if requested
• CD copy of all outside imaging (e.g. ultrasound) done that is related to the urinary tract system and reason for visit. You will need to go to the place where diagnostic test was done and request a CD copy.
• Any notes or questions that you may have.
• List of current medications (name, dosage, route, frequency) and allergies.

When you arrive, please check-in at the reception desk. The Business Clerk will register you in the electronic system so that your team will know that you have arrived.

Note: If your child is unwell or has a communicable disease such as Chicken Pox or has been in contact with someone with Chicken Pox, please call the clinic before you come to the hospital.

The pediatric urology interdisciplinary team includes two pediatric urologists and two pediatric nurse practitioners. We routinely work with medical students and residents who rotate through our service as part of their training.

Referrals are to be faxed directly to the 2G Clinic.  Please use our Referral Form.

Please include the following in all referrals:

• Patient demographics
• Reason for referral
• Brief history around reason for referral
• Any test (diagnostic imaging or laboratory) reports relevant to reason for referral
• Referrals for recurrent UTIs, please include all urine routine & microscopy and culture & sensitivity reports
• Please identify if the child has been diagnosed and not cleared for an antibiotic resistant organism (ARO) such as MRSA, VRE,ESBL
• Any relevant health history

Referrals are reviewed and triaged daily. Please allow up to two weeks for response. Initial consults may include diagnostic imaging such as ultrasound or require additional information/instructions for families such as voiding diaries. Please ensure that family receives not only clinic visit date/time but also all other additional instructions. A dictated letter is sent back to the primary care provider and if the referring physician is not the primary care provider they are copied.

Urgent Referrals: The clinics are not for emergencies. Please contact the Urology office directly or page pediatric urology on call for emergent/urgent referrals. Alternatively, instruct families to go to the emergency department at McMaster Children’s Hospital.
