Investing in our health, economy and future

Each month, more than 25,000 people rely on Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) for care – enough to fill Hamilton Stadium. We provide everything from emergency care to some of the most specialized medical services available in Ontario. HHS is here for Hamilton every day.

Now, we have a rare opportunity to secure the future of health care in our city.

Planning is underway to replace outdated hospital buildings that no longer meet the needs of modern medicine, in partnership with the Government of Ontario. This begins with the redevelopment of Juravinski Hospital. It is the region’s largest inpatient hospital and a key site for cancer care, orthopedic surgery and emergency services, helping thousands of patients and families across Hamilton and beyond.

Some of the buildings in use today are over 100 years old. They were not designed for today’s health care needs. It’s time to build for the future.

The rebuilding of Juravinski Hospital is more than a hospital project. It is an investment in the health and well-being of Hamiltonians and the city’s economic future. HHS is Hamilton’s largest employer. We bring in skilled professionals, support local businesses, and contribute to the growth of Hamilton’s life sciences sector.

In Ontario, major hospital projects require shared investment. The Province funds 90 percent of construction costs, while the rest–including the full cost of equipment and furnishings–is covered through hospital fundraising and municipal funding.

The Government of Ontario has already funded project planning and will contribute an additional $2 billion toward construction. However, their continued support depends on our ability to secure the local share of funding. To meet this challenge, the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation will lead the largest fundraising campaign in its history. To stay on track for construction to begin in 2028, we also need a commitment of funding support from the City of Hamilton.

Other communities across Ontario, including Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Windsor, Ottawa, Milton, Burlington, Grimsby, and the Niagara Region have provided financial support for new hospitals in their areas. Now, it is our community’s opportunity to do the same.

Hamilton, this is our moment. Let us come together—residents, business leaders, elected officials, and community partners—to shape a future we can all be proud of. Not just for today, but for future generations.

Together, we can shape a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous Hamilton for all.
