Portable heart monitor on patient while at home

New technology detects abnormal heart rhythms

We're utilizing a remote heart monitor before and after patients have a TAVI, a minimally invasive heart procedure, to determine if a pacemaker is required. This remote heart monitor is sent home with the patients and alerts doctors of arrhythmia or other heart abnormalities.

The region’s most gravely injured patients have

The region’s most gravely injured patients have a better chance of survival thanks to a tiny device that’s now part of the Regional Trauma Centre’s standard lifesaving equipment. Located at our Hamilton General Hospital, the Regional Trauma Centre for Central South Ontario is where the area’s most seriously injured and sick patients receive care.

For the past year-and-a-half, the trauma team has been trialing a small, innovative medical device called the COBRA-OS by Front Line Medical Technologies. It’s used only for the most severe trauma cases, to slow down excessive internal bleeding so patients can be stabilized long enough for potentially lifesaving surgery. Results of the trial were so promising, Hamilton General Hospital now stocks this device as a standard tool in its trauma bay.

As a teaching hospital, we also give our physiotherapy and occupational therapy students the opportunity to learn about the benefits and techniques of hydrotherapy. Teaching them these skills now helps them develop their careers, and improve the health of our community.

We recently launched a remote symptom monitoring program for patients living with heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It’s a Canadian first, with potential benefits including cost savings and a better patient and provider experience. The program includes nurse practitioners, and is supported by MyChart Care Companion, a feature in Epic, our state-of-the-art, fully digital hospital information system.
