April is #BeaDonorMonth, which brings attention to the need for organ donations. But, behind the scenes are our committed and dedicated health-care teams having the difficult conversations that make organ transplantation possible.

Leticia Cortez-Fasser (photo 1) is an operating room nurse who plays a important role in assisting with organ retrieval and maintaining viability for transplantation. She took on a leadership role in putting together an information package about organ donation for families at our McMaster University Medical Centre.

Zach Zacharewicz (photo 2) is a nurse working in our intensive care units and often work closely with patients who have suffered severe brain injuries or trauma. Sometimes this can unfortunately lead to devastating outcomes despite the team's best efforts. In these cases, he supports families considering organ donation as a way to honor their loved one’s legacy and potentially save the lives of others in need of organ transplants.

Michelle Bisaillon (photo 3) is a social worker supporting patients and families in the intensive care unit. She helps patients navigate the health-care system, advocates on their behalf and provide emotional support to their loved ones. Often she's supporting end-of-life-care, which includes conversations about organ donation. So, she works closely with the organ donation team to ensure everyone is aligned with the patient’s wishes.

Our evaluation of the real-time medical interpretation services from Voyce has been a huge success! At the click of a button, patients, nurses, and doctors can access a medically qualified human interpreter through Voyce devices. This offers profound benefits including improved patient comprehension, satisfaction, and outcomes.

“We aim to have Voyce in all patient-facing areas across HHS,” said Tim Dietrich, Vice President, Quality and Performance at Hamilton Health Sciences. “It is currently available in all in-patient, emergency and diagnostic imaging areas, and we are planning for implementation in all ambulatory settings. So far, our teams and patients have utilized Voyce more than 9,000 times accessing 85 distinct languages and dialects.”

13-year old Elizabeth received an unexpected diagn

13-year old Elizabeth received an unexpected diagnosis of scoliosis that threatened her active lifestyle and passion for dance.

Once referred to our McMaster Children's Hospital, her surgeon wanted to perform an ApiFix surgery, which uses a rod that can lengthen as the spine grows. This offers increased mobility and the ability for the spine to rotate.

Timing is important for the operation, so Elizabeth and her family were concerned that surgery wait times would impact the narrow window of opportunity.

Fortunately, thanks to a historic provincial investment, wait times have been reduced to help kids like Elizabeth receive the life-changing surgeries they need when they need it to have the best outcomes.

Elizabeth's surgery was successful and she returned to competitive dance last month. Her story is nothing short of inspirational.
