Innovation Spotlight ✨ Our Dr. Reema Shah is exp

Innovation Spotlight ✨ Our Dr. Reema Shah is exploring if using images from the capillaries in nailbeds could be a novel method to providing information about diabetes and its complications, like heart disease.

She partnered with Dr. Hertzel Gerstein, an HHS endocrinoligist and leader in diabetes research, and developed a research study using images from the finger’s nail fold. The nail fold attaches the nail to the rest of the skin through the protective cuticle. The images are captured through a simple, non-invasive, portable diagnostic test called a capillaroscopy.

Then, they partnered with HHS’ Centre for Data Science and Digital Health (CREATE) to use artificial intelligence to analyze the images.

The study analyzed 5,236 images from 120 adult patients and the artificial intelligence technique was able to accurately distinguishing between patients who did and did not have diabetes and could predict which patients are at greater risk for developing cardiovascular complications.

“This world-first innovation could lead to better management of diabetes and its complications and, it’s happening right here in Hamilton,” says Jeremy Petch, director of CREATE.

Today, the Ontario Government Made Kids Count with a historic investment of $330 million to expand children’s health care across the province, including at HHS's McMaster Children's Hospital.

HHS welcomes today's announcement to connect children and youth to high-quality care close to home at hospitals, clinics and community-based health care facilities across Ontario.

We recognize and appreciate that these government investments span the spectrum of young people’s health and well-being, supporting acute, surgery, developmental, rehabilitation, and mental health. When Hamilton Health Sciences senior medical lab technologist Brian Vandermey and his colleagues receive blood work, they see far more than samples in need of processing.

“We view these samples as our patients, as if they’re right there in front of us,” says Brian, who works at a core lab in our McMaster University Medical Centre.

“While we don’t work directly with patients, we feel connected to them through our work and making a difference in their lives. I’ve always really appreciated that.”

Staff in the core labs perform tests primarily on blood and urine samples to check for such things as urinary tract infections, anemia, diabetes, heart attacks, cancer and other diseases.

We're stepping up to prevent foot amputations. On

We're stepping up to prevent foot amputations.

Ontario has among the highest rates in the world for diabetes-related foot amputations, with lower Hamilton having the highest rates locally.

Hamilton Health Sciences together with the Greater Hamilton Health Network has launched a Socks Off campaign which aims to reduce the number of lower Hamilton residents with diabetes and/or vascular disease who lose a foot to amputation.

Aimed at family doctors and other health-care providers in lower Hamilton, the campaign encourages them to routinely check the bare feet of their patients with diabetes and vascular disease.

Hence the campaign’s name, Socks Off.

Find out more about how this campaign provides an opportunity to impact inequities in Hamilton in terms of health and wellness, as well collaboration among some of the top partners in the city.
