For Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth an

For Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation we'd like to remind our community of the dedicated Indigenous healing spaces we're working on creating at our hospital sites. These are intended to be safe spaces where Indigenous staff, patients and family members can experience peace, ceremonial healing and comfort, as well as a quiet space for all to learn about Indigenous culture.

This space at our McMaster Children's Hospital is already available. Makayla’s Room, shown in this picture was created in honour of patient Makayla Sault, with the support of her parents and Indigenous community leaders. We encourage staff, physicians, volunteers, patients and families to visit this space for some quiet learning and reflection of Indigenous culture.

We recently held a very special celebration for a long-serving volunteer, Ruby Halliday, who has dedicated 13 years and over 2000 hours to volunteering at HHS. ✨ Ruby started off her career with us in 1973 when she was a secretary in the Department of Medicine at the Chedoke-McMaster Hospital, which is now known as McMaster University Medical Centre. After working in multiple positions over the years, she retired in 2011 but decided to stay a part of the HHS family, and began volunteering. 🙋‍♀️

Ruby was given a special shout-out from her team at the Boris Clinic where she volunteers, and given flowers for being selected to receive the Life Membership Award. 💝 Our Volunteer Association team nominated Ruby to win this award because of her many years of service and the training she provides to other volunteers.

Thank you for continuing to share your friendly smile with all our visitors entering the building, and guiding them when they need help. 🎉 Congratulations Ruby!

HHS DRIVE's first ever SPARK Funding Competition has announced two winners. Congratulations to Dr. Catherine Demers with Corlibra and Dr. Aleksa Cenic with Vivo Surgery!👏

Corlibra aims to empower individuals living with heart failure by revolutionizing in-home disease management. Their innovative, cost-effective solution provides a simplified approach tailored to the unique needs of older individuals. Corlibra’s dedication to enhancing heart failure self-management reflects the essence of our mission at HHS DRIVE, where innovation meets inclusivity in the world of health care.

VIVO Surgery has a visionary approach to transforming surgical education. Their cloud-based platform offers a live, high-definition, multi-view video display from an operating theatre to more than 30 remote locations. This innovative platform delivers a secure, zero-latency livestream, enabling surgeons to learn new procedures interactively. Surgeons can ask questions and receive responses in real-time, fostering a dynamic learning experience.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all applicants who submitted their innovative ideas. We were deeply impressed by the creativity, dedication, and passion demonstrated in each application. The commitment to advancing health care and improving patient outcomes is commendable, and it reminds us that innovation is a collective journey.

One of Natasha’s most prized possessions include

One of Natasha’s most prized possessions includes a hearty aloe vera plant given to her by a fellow patient at our Michael G. DeGroote Pain Clinic. The Mississauga resident attended the clinic’s Intensive Chronic Pain Management Program last fall, and calls the experience life-changing. She’s sharing her story for #PainAwarenessMonth in September to help raise awareness of chronic pain, pain management and the clinic.

The five-week program that Natasha participated in was offered in a small group format, and on the last day one of the other patients brought everyone a tiny aloe vera plant as a gift, to celebrate their time together and what they accomplished along the way.

“I’ve had to re-pot mine at least twice since then because it has grown so much,” says Natasha, who draws inspiration from the thriving, spiky-pronged plant. “I admire it every day and take good care of it because it reminds me of my time at the clinic, and my journey in managing chronic pain.”
