Our West Niagara Mental Health team at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital is launching a research project to help healthcare providers support youth and young adults with mental health issues.

We're thrilled to be partnering with @stjoeshamilton, @greaterhamiltonhealthnetwork, @thehubhamilton and our @supporthhsfoundation to offer this dedicated space for individuals experiencing homelessness after they are discharged from hospital, especially during these cold winter months.

“Our teams always grapple with discharging patients who are homeless,” says Dr. Alim Pardhan, chief of emergency medicine at Hamilton Health Sciences. “This dedicated space is a critical support to meet their immediate needs for a warm shelter while also making it possible to connect them with other assistance in the community.”

Surgeons at our Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Cen

Surgeons at our Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre are testing an AI tool that can catch signs of life-threatening infections early in patients recovering from certain colorectal, liver and pancreatic surgeries. This innovative AI tool, created by Waterloo medical technology company FluidAI Medical, could also save hospitals hundreds of thousands of dollars by reducing the need for certain medical tests, emergency department visits and readmissions.

FluidAI is testing its Stream Platform AI system, including its proprietary Origin device, in an international trial with Hamilton Health Sciences, the primary hospital leading this innovation. Other hospitals in the study are partnering with us.

This tool specializes in the early detection of potentially deadly leaks of bowel contents, like fecal matter or bile, into the abdominal cavity and blood stream in the days following surgery. Such post-surgical leaks sometimes happen when sections of bowel or bile duct have been cut and reattached, and sutures accidentally come loose.

Hamilton Health Sciences midwife Spencer Sawyer is

Hamilton Health Sciences midwife Spencer Sawyer is among the first hospitalist midwives in the country to specialize in bereavement support for patients during and after a pregnancy loss. Hospitalist midwives work in hospitals, providing direct care to patients during their pregnancy, labour and delivery, and postpartum.

“Many high-risk pregnancies benefit from the leading-edge, innovative work by our maternal-fetal medicine team, including our incredible physicians, nurses, and nurse practitioners who often prevent high-risk pregnancies from resulting in loss,” says Sawyer. “But sadly, in some cases, a pregnancy loss is unpreventable.”

The hospitalist midwifery team at our McMaster University Medical Centre saw an opportunity for a bereavement specialist in addition to services already available to patients experiencing pregnancy loss. Sawyer felt passionate about taking on that role, and worked with departments including maternal fetal medicine, prenatal diagnostics, labour and delivery, and post-partum care to develop this specialized portfolio of work.

He’s also exploring best practices through research, by pursuing a master’s of midwifery degree part-time at McMaster University. His master’s project, focusing on the specialized role of a bereavement midwife, could pave the way for this position to be introduced at other Canadian hospitals.
