HHS doctor invested into Order of Canada

Dr. Mark Levine, a medical oncologist at Juravinski Cancer Centre (JCC), received one of our country’s highest honours today. He was invested into the Order of Canada at a ceremony in Ottawa.

The former President & CEO of the Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre (now JCC) is a world-renowned clinician-researcher whose studies have improved health care in Canada and beyond.

Dr. Levine is chair of the Department of Oncology at McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, and holds the Buffett Taylor Chair in Breast Cancer Research. In 1982, he helped establish the Ontario Clinical Oncology Group and in 2011, co-founded the Escarpment Cancer Research Institute, a pioneering centre that combines leading science with excellence in patient care.

His clinical trials in patients with early breast cancer have have shortened the duration of chemotherapy after surgery, and added a new chemotherapy drug option after surgery to improve survival. He also pioneered research in shared decision making to enhance clinician-patient communication around treatment choices.
