Foundation gala supports innovative research
Hamilton Health Sciences is one of the 25 most influential research communities in the world, and is ranked fourth out of Canada’s top 40 research hospitals. Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation is able to support the leading-edge research conducted at Hamilton Health Sciences thanks to the generosity of donors, fundraisers and event sponsors.
On March 4, The Foundation will transform the Hamilton Convention Centre into a unique San Francisco and Napa Valley experience at the Streetcars to Vineyards Gala, presented by IBM. Guests will indulge their senses and savour wonderful California wines, and then be transported to a Union Square Reception and the Golden Gate Ballroom, all in a single evening. Patient Empowerment and New Models of Personalized Cancer Care
Precision medicine involving personalized care will revolutionize treatment for patients diagnosed with cancer within the next few years. This first stage research project will examine the experiences and perspectives of patients, nurses and other health care providers about precision medicine in order to inform the development and evaluation of a new model of care.
Assessing the Implications of Post-surgical Complications after Coronary Bypass Surgery
Stroke, post-operative delirium and neurocognitive deficits remain the most serious and feared complications after cardiac surgery. This pilot study will assess whether patients who have undergone coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, and who experience a covert stroke as a post-surgical complication, have a higher incidence of delirium and worse cognitive function than those who do not experience a covert stroke post-surgery.
Improving Care of Children and Adolescents with Abdominal Pain
Appendicitis is by far the most common emergency surgical condition in children and adolescents. The goal of this research project is to develop and assess a standardized approach to diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents with abdominal pain to determine if it will improve the accuracy of diagnosis, and reduce unnecessary tests, admissions and surgery.
After the Diagnosis: Facilitating the Education of Patients Diagnosed with Dementia, Their Families and Caregivers
When patients are diagnosed with dementia, there is a lot of information that needs to be communicated. The goal of this project is to provide a way to enable patients, families and caregivers to access the appropriate information at their convenience in their own environment. The goal is to develop an online portal “iGeriCare” where geriatricians would “prescribe” relevant educational modules followed by an assessment on the effectiveness of this model.
