Hamilton Health Sciences midwife Spencer Sawyer co

Hamilton Health Sciences midwife Spencer Sawyer could be the first hospitalist midwife in the country to specialize in bereavement support for patients during and after a pregnancy loss. Hospitalist midwives work in hospitals, providing direct care to patients during their pregnancy, labour and delivery, and postpartum.

“Many high-risk pregnancies benefit from the leading-edge, innovative work by our maternal-fetal medicine team, including our incredible physicians, nurses, and nurse practitioners who often prevent high-risk pregnancies from resulting in loss,” says Sawyer. “But sadly, in some cases, a pregnancy loss is unpreventable.”

The hospitalist midwifery team at our McMaster University Medical Centre saw an opportunity for a bereavement specialist in addition to services already available to patients experiencing pregnancy loss. Sawyer felt passionate about taking on that role, and worked with departments including maternal fetal medicine, prenatal diagnostics, labour and delivery, and post-partum care to develop this specialized portfolio of work.

He’s also exploring best practices through research, by pursuing a master’s of midwifery degree part-time at McMaster University. His master’s project, focusing on the specialized role of a bereavement midwife, could pave the way for this position to be introduced at other Canadian hospitals.

The region’s most gravely injured patients have

The region’s most gravely injured patients have a better chance of survival thanks to a tiny device that’s now part of the Regional Trauma Centre’s standard lifesaving equipment. Located at our Hamilton General Hospital, the Regional Trauma Centre for Central South Ontario is where the area’s most seriously injured and sick patients receive care.

For the past year-and-a-half, the trauma team has been trialing a small, innovative medical device called the COBRA-OS by Front Line Medical Technologies. It’s used only for the most severe trauma cases, to slow down excessive internal bleeding so patients can be stabilized long enough for potentially lifesaving surgery. Results of the trial were so promising, Hamilton General Hospital now stocks this device as a standard tool in its trauma bay.

As a teaching hospital, we also give our physiotherapy and occupational therapy students the opportunity to learn about the benefits and techniques of hydrotherapy. Teaching them these skills now helps them develop their careers, and improve the health of our community.
