Congratulations to one of our oncologists and @ecr

Congratulations to one of our oncologists and @ecri_research researcher, Dr. Hira Mian! She has been awarded the prestigious Dr. Ralph Meyer Phase III Young Investigator Award from Canadian Cancer Trials Group.

Her study on a treatment for a rare blood cancer has the potential to benefit patients not only across Canada, but around the world.

About 4,000 people are diagnosed with multiple myeloma in Canada each year and they continuously receive treatment while in remission.

For the current standard of care, patients maintain a three-drug regimen for five years. This means they’re travelling to a hospital every month for a treatment by IV or injection.

The trial divides patients into two groups. One group will receive the standard treatment of monthly IV or injection and two oral medications for five years. The other group will stop the IV or injection treatments after 18 months, with close monitoring, and continue with the oral medications.

The belief is that 18 months of the IV medication will be as effective as five years.

Orangeville teen Katie Mantione grew up as an acti

Orangeville teen Katie Mantione grew up as an active child doing competitive figure skating, dance, skiing and school sports. When activities resumed after pandemic-related closures in 2022, she joined her high school’s rugby team. During a game Katie rolled her ankle, and another player landed on top of it when she was tackled. And then, not a minute later, another player stepped on her.

"I was telling them I can’t feel my foot. It literally feels like there’s nothing there. They took an x-ray and said it’s a mild sprain and suggested I keep it wrapped, apply ice and elevate. My foot was just hanging there. I don’t know how many times I wished they would just amputate it. Everything in my life was just all of a sudden taken away. Dance and rugby were taken away. I couldn’t drive anymore. I couldn’t really walk except on crutches, so I didn’t go anywhere. I had to stop working and quit my job. I basically isolated myself and didn’t hang out with friends for almost six months. I became known as ‘crutch girl’ at school. I was getting more frustrated, more depressed, more isolated," says

While the original injury was only a sprain, Katie had developed complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), a rare chronic condition where the nervous system amplifies an injury causing excessive pain even after the initial injury has healed.

For two years, the McMaster Children’s Hospital Pediatric Pain Program helped Katie learn coping strategies to manage her pain and return to the life and activities she enjoyed. The team’s care and support also extended to parenting support for her mom, Anna so that she could learn strategies to support Katie’s physical and mental health needs.
