Winning Wednesdays: Hitting the jackpot while supporting health care

“I received a phone call in early November telling me that I’d won $16,476,”says John Beattie, who works in Clinical Chemistry at Hamilton General Hospital. “I was shocked because I never thought I’d ever win, and I was floored by the amount.”

John’s ticket had been drawn for Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation’s Winning Wednesdays 50/50 Staff Lottery, which is open to all Hamilton Health Sciences employees and volunteers.

Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) employees can enter the draw through ongoing payroll deductions. It’s easy and convenient to participate. A maximum of 15,000 tickets are available for each of the 26 bi-weekly draws for the year. Tickets are $3 each per pay per ticket with a maximum of six tickets per individual allowed. The biweekly draw is held on the Wednesday following each pay day.

“We don’t have any specific plans for the money right now,” John explains. “I will say that it’s a nice little bonus, especially at this time of the year right before the holidays.”

Fifty percent of all funds received for each biweekly draw will be awarded, while the other half will support Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation to enrich patient care at HHS.

“It’s a great way of giving back to both the community and our own colleagues at Hamilton Health Sciences, helping us to provide the best health care services possible.”

The Foundation provides funding for leading-edge equipment and patient amenities, which are not funded by the government, as well as innovative research initiatives, redevelopment of patient care spaces, and the education and training of health care providers across its supported sites.

“I like knowing that the purchase of my ticket is helping to support Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation,” John says. “It’s a great way of giving back to both the community and our own colleagues at Hamilton Health Sciences, helping us to provide the best health care services possible.”
