2021 Celebrations: Cancer Care

FEATURE STORY

New radiation therapy machines deliver treatment four times faster

We’re very fortunate at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) to have the latest leading-edge technology for treating patients. This includes the addition of two new radiation therapy machines in 2021 for our radiation treatment program, located at HHS’ Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre. These new machines deliver radiation therapy to cancer patients four times faster than the ones they replaced. Read.

HHS shared a wide selection of stories in 2021 showcasing the exceptional cancer care provided at the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre. Treatments including chemotherapy, radiation and stem cell transplants take place at this regional referral centre, as well groundbreaking cancer research.

The first-ever Breast Cancer Learning Health System Chair started work here thanks to fundraising by BRIGHT Run, an annual walk/run in support of local breast cancer research. Dr. Ashirbani Saha’s leadership and expertise in machine learning will help local breast cancer researchers reach new goals and successes, leading to improved care for patients.

HHS cancer patients generously shared their stories. We heard from a Burlington poet with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a Hamilton real estate agent recovering from testicular cancer and Simcoe colon cancer patient who raised more than $20,000 for the JHCC’s Foundation through a fundraising triathlon. These patients shared their cancer journeys and praised the high-quality care they received.

We were also pleased to introduce you to HHS radiologist Dr. Meredith Lynch, the new regional breast imaging lead for the Ontario Breast Screening Program. And we brought you into the worlds of other HHS staff members including a registered dietitian specializing in cancer care and a senior magnetic resonance imaging technologist.
