After being diagnosed with a rare type of bone mar

After being diagnosed with a rare type of bone marrow cancer two years ago, Hamilton Health Sciences patient Peter Clarke was inspired to create Your Match Matters, a non-profit organization that encourages people ages 17 to 35 from diverse backgrounds to join the Canadian Blood Services Stem Cell Registry.

Donors in that age range give patients undergoing a stem cell transplant the best chance of long-term survival, and many people worldwide have difficulty finding a match due to a lack of diversity in stem cell registries.

Though Peter will eventually need a transplant, he wasn’t motivated to launch Your Match Matters because of a personal search for a donor. Four potential matches have already been found for him. Instead, he wants help patients who are struggling to find a match.

“I was hearing stories of families frantically looking for matches for their family members,” says Peter, a retired environmental consultant and an avid cyclist. “I couldn't imagine the panic and helplessness they felt, and wanted to help change the odds.”

Mississauga teenager Brandon Philip was interested

Mississauga teenager Brandon Philip was interested in elective surgery to correct a bowl-like cavity in his chest caused by pectus excavatum, a defect where the breastbone is sunken in. The abnormality wasn’t endangering his health, but it made the 17-year-old feel self-conscious and often sparked questions from other kids.

After learning that recovery from corrective surgery would be long and extremely painful, Brandon opted not to go ahead. But he changed his mind, and had the surgery last month, after learning that our McMaster Children’s Hospital now has an innovative nerve freezing technology specifically for this surgery, that’s highly effective in helping patients manage pain post-operatively.

“Making the decision to go ahead was definitely easier after learning that this pain management was available,” says Brandon. While he still experienced pain post-operatively, it was manageable and he could walk the next morning – something that wouldn’t have been possible prior to cryo nerve block.
