2022 Celebrations: Cancer Care

Score! Paralympian a role model for young cancer, amputee patients

Back in April, we shared a story featuring Garrett Riley, a Hamilton Health Sciences patient who overcame enormous challenges to represent Canada at the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing. Riley was treated for cancer as a teen at our McMaster Children’s Hospital and later received care at our Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre, and the Regional Rehabilitation Centre at our Hamilton General Hospital.

The 26-year-old showed true grit in overcoming many obstacles related to his health, and he has become a role model for cancer and amputee patients in Hamilton and across Canada.

Our year in review

Hamilton Health Sciences shared a wide selection of stories and videos in 2022, showcasing the exceptional cancer care provided at Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre (JHCC). Treatments including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and stem cell transplants take place at this regional referral centre, as well as  groundbreaking cancer research. Many of our stories featured patients benefiting from this leading-edge care, who shared their experiences as a way to say thank you and also help other people facing similar health-care challenges.

Here are some of our favorite stories from 2022. We look forward to sharing even more inspiring patient, staff and physician stories in the new year.
