Special Hematology

The Special Hematology service brings world class care to patients in our community. Through the Laboratory Reference Centre, the exemplary work performed in Special Hematology is accessed by communities across the province and country.

Flow Cytometry

The Flow Cytometry Laboratory provides flow cytometric analysis of blood, bone marrow and other tissues. It provides rapid detection and classification of hematologic malignancies.  It also provides an integral and collaborative service to the stem cell transplantation program.

The laboratory is located at the Juravinski Hospital and is a busy referral laboratory for numerous hospitals in South Central Ontario.  It has two faculty members with special interest and expertise in cellular diagnostics.

Red Cell Disorders

The Molecular Hematology and Genetics Laboratory provides diagnostic services for a variety of benign and malignant hematologic diseases. The laboratory has expertise in specialized analysis of the hemoglobin variants, thalassemias and hemolytic anemias as well as providing molecular testing for several malignant disorders including leukemia, lymphoma and the myeloproliferative disorders.

It is also the Provincial DNA Hemoglobinopathy laboratory used as an Ontario reference centre with a long history of leading edge new test development and validation.

The laboratory is located at McMaster University Medical Centre. Our laboratory director is certified by American Board of Medical Genetics who works closely with the laboratory technologists and a technical specialist who are focused on the developing a leading edge diagnostic service for molecular hematology.

Special Coagulation

The Special Coagulation Laboratory provides highly specialized diagnostic services for the investigation of thrombosis and hemostasis disorders. The laboratory provides reference testing for a variety of esoteric coagulation tests, as well as and is a leading edge diagnostic service laboratory for novel anti-coagulants.

This laboratory is located at McMaster University Medical Centre. The team includes a faculty member and one technical specialist with extensive experience in coagulation.

Malignant Hematology

The Malignant Hematology Laboratory’s primary focus is the diagnosis of hematologic malignancies from blood and bone marrow samples, utilizing microscopy and special stains.

The laboratory is located at the Juravinski Hospital. It has highly experienced morphologists, staff hematologists and a pathologist. The laboratory provides service for our hospital patients, a large cancer clinic, and reference service for the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant LHIN.
